Mar 2009: The next best thing to catching a 70mm print at the Astor cinema, Stanley Kubrick’s groundbreaking Space Odyssey is simply awesome in High Definition and looks like it was shot yesterday. The transfer is so good, you almost expect to catch your reflection in the obsidian Monolith.

Mar 2009: One of the benchmark titles for Blu-ray, this is a higher contrast transfer than the standard DVD with the added bonus of the sequences shot for IMAX presented in their original large format ratio. Simply stunning, and the ideal demo disc to convert your sceptical friends to High Def.

Mar 2009: Originally the showcase disc for the fledgling DVD format, the original and the best of the Wachowski’s cerebral sci-fi trilogy is similarly spectacular on Blu-ray. Full of impenetrable blacks and luminous greens, The Matrix now looks even better than it did back in 1999 when digital video discs made us all go “Whoa!”.

Mar 2009: Put on your Sunday clothes and get yourself down to JB to pick up what is arguably Pixar’s finest animated film to date. The austere look of the first half, in which the eponymous robot cleans up a littered Earth, yields to a panoply of colour in this stunning Blu-ray edition. There’s a bonus short film, too.
