Psycho
A mother of a HD title.
Psycho
Release date: Sep 01, 2010

Sep 2010: One of Hitchcock’s best films and ranked among the greatest horror films of all time, Psycho still packs a considerable wallop 50 years since it first shocked moviegoers. This newly remastered HD transfer will silence cynics who don’t believe that black-and-white benefits from High-Definition. Moreover, Bernard Herrmann’s brilliant and iconic score has been given a 5.1 upgrade, with the original audio track retained for purists. This 50th Anniversary Edition comes loaded with extra features, and it’s the vintage material (trailers, promo spots, newsreels, etc.) from the film’s original release that provides the most fun. This terrific Blu-ray package is only available from JB Hi-Fi stores and carries STACK’s highest recommendation.

Beneath Hill 60
Aussie diggers story unearthed.
Beneath Hill 60
Release date: Aug 19, 2010

DVD Bits: Commentary // Director's storyboard // Photo gallery
Aug 2010: With the aid of Screen Australia funding, this wartime drama is a local production based on the remarkable exploits of Oliver Woodward, an Australian miner heavily involved in the tunnelling efforts under the Western front, designed to sabotage the Germans. Directed by actor-turned-filmmaker Jeremy Sims (Last Train to Freo), this little known episode from the trenches of the First World War stars Brendan Cowell (TV’s Love My Way) as Woodward. Aside from being a tribute to the courageous exploits of the diggers involved, Beneath Hill 60 delivers a riveting combination of thrills and drama in the tradition of Kokoda.

The Men Who Stare At Goats
Release date: Jul 14, 2010

DVD Bits: Featurettes // Commentary
Jul 2010: "More of this is true than you would believe" declares this movie's opening disclaimer. Ewan McGregor plays a journalist stationed in Iraq who smells a story when he meets George Clooney, who claims to be a member of a covert US Army branch from the 1980s that used paranormal powers as a weapon. These psychic spies claimed they possessed the ability to stop the hearts of goats and other animals with a well trained glance. Jeff Bridges (channelling The Dude from The Big Lebowski) is the drug addled Vietnam vet who trained this band of brothers in the secrets of out of body combat, and via flashback we're privy to these "Jedi mind tricks". With a title this quirky and a cast this cool, how can you resist this terrific wartime comedy? Highly recommended.

A zom-com to rival Shaun.
Zombieland
Release date: May 05, 2010

DVD Bits: Commentary // Featurettes // Deleted scenes // 2 Disc Nut Up or Shut Up Edition also available // BD Exclusives
May 2010: The New York Post calls Zombieland “The funniest comedy since The Hangover”. We’ll even go so far as to say that this zom-com is even more fun than a stag night from Hell. The world is a wasteland after a virus has turned everyone into the flesh-eating living dead. Everyone except for a handful of survivors like college nerd Jesse Eisenberg and trigger-happy cowboy Woody Harrelson (in top form). This mismatched pair hit the road together, staying one step ahead of the dead and a pair of opportunistic sisters (Abigail Breslin and Emma Stone) with whom they eventually join forces. En route to a rousing amusement park showdown the group discover Bill Murray, zombie clowns and a serious lack of Twinkies. Writer-director Ruben Fleischer is a filmmaker to watch and brings a fresh approach and some great characters to what is essentially a familiar formula. Move over Shaun of the Dead.

It Might Get Loud
The meeting of great musical minds.
It Might Get Loud
Release date: Apr 07, 2010

Apr 2010: If Anvil!: The Story of Anvil was an exploration of the personalities of a rock band, It Might Get Loud is a historical lesson in rock guitar, ably conducted by three iconic players – Jack White, The Edge and Jimmy Page. The three musicians come together in a part-summit part-jam session to discuss inspiration, origin and influence. They trade ideas and styles – three generations of axemen feeding the forum with a visual display of trademark licks and chords. The documentary introduces the heritage and history of each musician through archival footage that includes The Edge performing U2's first gig while still at school, Jack White playing a White Stripes show before a bewildered collection of Chelsea Pensioners, and Jimmy Page's insightful commentary on his return to Headley Grange, where Led Zeppelin IV was recorded. It Might Get Loud is indeed a fine lesson in fan service, but there is more here than just music geek education. This is a voyeuristic journey into the demiurgic minds of three musicians from very different eras, charting the transendance of the rock guitar as the instrument that defined their art.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil
The missing link between documentary, rockumentary and mockumentary.
Anvil! The Story of Anvil
Release date: Mar 03, 2010

Mar 2010: The battling spirit is an admirable human trait that not everybody possesses. Anvil have it – in droves. The band tasted fame in the early '80s when rock musicians probably spent more on hair product than actual record productions. However, where many of their contemporaries achieved worldwide success, Anvil were left behind to stagnate, supported only by a posse of die-hard fans. These days, some 25 years later, they are trapped in suburb sobriety, the pursuit of an archaic dream remains as passionate now as the day that time forgot them. Throughout the film the pair bicker, fall out and re-unite with emotional declarations of undying love; they survive a futile and crowd-free tour of Europe then venture back into the studio to record for "that" album they still believe is within them. You'll laugh – sometimes out of embarrassment – but above all else, you'll want them to win. For the sake of humankind, you'll want them to win.

Moon
Rockwell rocks in this instant sci-fi classic.
Moon
Release date: Feb 24, 2010

DVD Bits: Featurettes // Commentaries // Short film // Director Q&A
Feb 2010: A two hander starring Sam Rockwell and a robot with Kevin Spacey's voice, Moon is an inventive sci-fi thriller that rates alongside the recent District 9 as an example of the genre at its very best. Rockwell is nearing the end of his tenure on an isolated, one-man lunar mining base. Following an accident on the surface, he awakens in the medical bay to discover that he is no longer alone. An exploration of outer and inner space follows. Consistently creative and compelling, and armed with a terrific twist, Moon is a cerebral sci-fi film in the tradition of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Contact, where big ideas and the nature of the human condition take precedent over big special FX and angry aliens. Highly recommended.

UP
Pixar soars to new heights in animation.
UP
Release date: Jan 13, 2010

DVD Bits: Shorts // Featurettes // BD Exclusives: Commentary, featurettes, Alternate scene
Jan 2010: The 10th animated feature from animation powerhouse Pixar, Up boasts a protagonist as unexpected as its central premise. Cranky old timer Carl Fredrickson (voiced by Ed Asner) sees his dream of travelling to South America die with his wife's passing. When developers begin tearing down the neighbourhood, Carl seizes the moment and makes a novel exit – tying thousands of helium balloons to his house which floats off into the sky, next stop Paradise Falls, South America. Airborne, Carl discovers an unexpected passenger, a young boy scout named Russell who is eager to obtain his badge for 'assisting the elderly', but instead gets a wild adventure he couldn't have imagined. This mismatched pair is just one of the treats in this decidedly unconventional Pixar offering that's as much for adults as it is for kids. Up is both a colourful adventure with talking animals and a moving tale about love, loss and following your dreams. And the animation is, of course, outstanding.

Dec 2009: Sam Raimi’s long overdue return to the horror genre is everything fans could have hoped for: a gleefully scary slapstick shocker, driven by the same dark wit and irreverence that powered his celebrated Evil Dead series. Alison Lohman plays an unfortunate bank worker who is cursed by the crazy old gypsy woman (Lorna Raver) she inadvertently humiliates when refusing her an extension on a loan. She has three days to try and get the curse lifted, otherwise she will be getting a one-way ticket to the lower depths. Lohman stoically endures every indignity Raimi cheerfully heaps upon her, while Raver is a revelation as the octogenarian ogre, an unlikely addition to the ranks of horror villains. The perfect antidote for those suffering from an overdose of feel-good family viewing over Christmas.

The Hangover
Release date: Nov 25, 2009

DVD Bits: Map of Destruction // Gag reel // more
Nov 2009: There's been an abundance of chick flicks in 2009, so here's one for the guys – and it's a ripper. A surprise blockbuster hit at the box office, The Hangover is not only the ideal bloke flick but also one of the best comedies of the year. The stag night gone wrong has always been a popular comedy standby (Very Bad Things, Bachelor Party), as three buddies discover when they find the groom-to-be has gone missing following a drunken weekend bender in Vegas (where else?). Attempting to locate their pal and recall the events of the previous night leads to further misadventures. Directed by Todd Phillips (Old School) has delivered a smart and consistently funny comedy that thoroughly mines the comic potential of its premise, but not without a sense of sympathy for the characters. The Blu-ray edition features an Extended Cut of the film.

A prank involving a local urban legend becomes a terrifying ordeal; a school principal moonlights as a killer, armed with deadly candy; a cranky old geezer hides a dark secret; and a group of gal pals (including True Blood’s Anna Paquin) have a run-in with a vampire – or do they? Each tale comes armed with a ghoulish punchline, ensuring this fun and stylish romp is an absolute treat.

Jun 2009: Coming of age, loss of innocence, romance, the Holocaust and an Oscar for Kate Winslet are all elements of this compelling morality tale as recalled by a German lawyer (Ralph Fiennes), whose teenage affair with the older Kate Winslet leads to a shocking revelation (or not so surprising if you've seen the all-too-revealing trailer). This provocative film tackles the sensitive issues of teenage seduction and Holocaust atrocities and it's to the credit of director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and screenwriter David Hare that neither is sensationalised: they are simply the formative elements of the protagonist's life. Winslet is terrific and so is young German newcomer David Kross, in his first English speaking role. Highly recommended.

Frost/Nixon
Release date: Apr 29, 2009

DVD Bits: Commentary // Deleted scenes // Featurette // Interview footage // The Nixon Library
May 2009: Known for his fierce intellect, Richard Nixon in many ways appeared the right man to guide America through a tough period in the nation's history. Vietnam, cold war tension, civil rights and the oil crisis were but some of the issues he grappled with. But it was Nixon's cover-up of illegal covert activities that would threaten to tarnish his legacy. In a desire to clear his name of the Watergate scandal, Nixon accepted a face-off he thought he would easily win – a series of televised chats with talk show host David Frost. The encounter would grip a nation. Frost, celebrity and confidante to the stars, is the underdog, pitted against Nixon's machiavellian guile and political experience. Director Ron Howard's dramatisation is like a classic heavyweight bout, where the opponents circle and the tension ebbs and flows, with the ultimate payoff an absolute knockout.

Quadrophenia
Release date: Mar 04, 2009

DVD Bits: 1979 film set in mid-'60s London now released as a 2-disc special edition DVD including Commentary // Documentary // Featurette // Collector's Booklet
Mar 2009: Franc Roddam’s Quadrophenia is less a celebration of youth than an emphatic baptism of a modernist counterculture. Set during the decade that granted youth independence, identity, tribal followings and the widespread use of recreational pharmaceuticals, sharply dressed Mods roamed the streets of sixties London and fought their antithesis, the leather clad rockers. The modern hooligan was born. Quadrophenia follows a young Mod called Jimmy (Phil Daniels) through amphetamine fuelled weekend highs, to the desperate gloom of Monday’s comedown. The progenitor of Britain’s modern pop culture movies, this 1979 classic set the benchmark for the next thirty years of angst-ridden realism that British cinema does best.

The Mummy: Tomb Of the Dragon Emperor
Release date: Jan 08, 2009

Jan 2009: Originally appearing back in 1999, the first film in The Mummy franchise was less a remake of the Universal horror classic than a tongue-in-cheek adventure romp designed to fill the void left by Indiana Jones. So it’s interesting that in a year where Indy has finally returned, so too has the Mummy in a second sequel. Offering more of the same, the location has moved to China and the Mummy is now an evil emperor (Jet Li), who is dug up by the son of the Brendan Fraser character (Aussie Luke Ford, The Black Balloon) and determined to reawaken his army of Terracotta warriors and seize control of the country. John Hannah returns as the comic relief, Michelle Yeoh plays a witch and Maria Bello replaces Rachel Weisz in the role of Evelyn. Tomb of the Dragon Emperor delivers all the ingredients that made the prior Mummy films a success – an onslaught of spectacular digital FX, high adventure and tongue in cheek humour – albeit now transplanted to an exotic eastern setting.

Nov 2008: There’s very little that 16 Emmy award nominations doesn’t say about a comedy/drama, though that description might also lack for some detail. Mad Men revolves around the lives of skirt chasing, cigarette smoking, boozing advertising executives in 1960s New York. The New York Times describes the show as "a series that breaks new ground by luxuriating in the not-so-distant past". The Golden Globes also gave it the thumbs up, awarding it Best Drama, and star John Hamm (Don Draper) Best Actor for season one. The makers of The Sopranos clearly had something on their minds when that series exited stage left, and Mad Men was it. Jun 2008: The sexually overt series that freed David Duchovny from his Fox Mulder X-Files shtick more than earned its 2008 Golden Globe win. Season 1 introduces the maelstrom that passes for the life of writer Hank Moody (Duchovny). Confronted with various obstacles: a stalled literary career, the emotionally out of reach ex-wife he still loves, and a revolving door of women slain by his drunken, cynical charm, Moody clings hard enough to his own moral code that viewers continue to give a damn. Californication's steamy debut may have spawned fundamentalist panic, but the show's more a brilliantly scripted cautionary tale than a threat to anyone's children. Did you know...? Writers Tom Kapinos and Gia Fattore wrote numerous Dawson's Creek references into Californication's dialogue, as an ode to their old show.

May 2008: This was an event movie with a difference! When its enigmatic trailer first hit the internet, the then untitled film promised the Statue of Liberty’s head hurled onto the streets of New York like a bowling ball. What the hell was going on? Was this another, gulp, Godzilla remake, this time courtesy of producer J.J. Abrams? Cloverfield is indeed a traditional monster movie, albeit refashioned for the digital era in that the events that unfold are captured on the camcorder of a bunch of young partygoers caught up in the disaster, and presented as “found footage”. Yep, it’s Godzilla via The Blair Witch Project with the handheld approach not only giving the events a more intimate sense of unfolding dread but ensuring the film is even more effective at home than it was in cinemas. The sound design alone will shake the room and put you even further in the picture. Did you know...?
