At one stage, it looked as if The Chronicles of Narnia would come to an abrupt stop with the second film of C.S. Lewis’s celebrated children’s series, Prince Caspian.

But after a brief hiatus, the franchise back on the water (literally) again with veteran director Michael Apted taking over the helm from the Kiwi director of the first two films, Andrew Adamson (although he is still onboard as producer).

This time around the story focuses on Lucy and Edmund Pevensie, who, together with their hated cousin Eustace, are whisked back to Narnia when they discover a painting of the ship called Dawn Treader at the latter’s home.

Caspian, now a king, is on the trail of the lost Lords of Telmar, and their epic sea voyage finds the kids again battling the forces of the White Witch (Tilda Swinton) and their own personal demons.

Apted’s brisk, no-nonsense direction and the agreeable performances – look out for a memorable voice cameo from Simon Pegg as the buccaneering mouse Reepicheep – make this a most welcome return.
