Super 8 is another triumph for director J.J. Abrams following his Star Trek reboot. It's a throwback to the kind of films that Steven Spielberg and Joe Dante were making in the early '80s – E.T., Explorers, The Goonies et al – involving a bunch of kids who stumble upon something fantastic in a small American town.

The youngsters of Super 8 are shooting a zombie movie (on Super 8 mm film, hence the title) one night when they witness a spectacular train crash and something big and monstrous escaping from the wreckage.

When pets and locals begin disappearing around town and the military suddenly show up, the gang decide to track down the creature themselves.

Set in 1979, Abrams has perfectly captured the period and the tone of the aforementioned films which have served as his inspiration.

Super 8 is pure nostalgia for those who grew up with Spielberg and Dante movies, and will hopefully inspire a new generation of viewers to seek out these old classics to discover what they've missed.

STARRING: Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso, Noah Emmerich, Ron Eldard, Riley Griffiths, Ryan Lee, Zach Mills

Did You Know...? Since the kids were making a zombie movie, there are several references to director George A. Romero. For example, Romero Chemicals is the evil company, plus the poster for one of his movies in Joe's bedroom.

If I was comparing this film to ice-cream I found it more an injection of triple choc aimed at the 80s nostalgia market and generation X rather than a cheaper Neopolitan blend (nice analogy though!). I felt the film was overwhelmingly brilliant - essentially it's an ET remake with teeth and a conspiracy theory, fun throughout save for the Spielbergesque ending. But even that wasn't half bad.

A must for 80s ET and nostalgia buffs, a really well shot piece right down to the authentic BMX bikes and other set minutae.

Did I mention the BMX bikes? Four stars.

Neopolitan ice cream is a guaranteed crowd pleaser-combining 3 in 1 flavours, people could choose the flavour they wanted, or mix and match if they felt daring.Super 8 though, more resembles a "Neopolitan thick shake".With the vanilla essence coming of age story, chocolate undertones of alien government conspiracy, and strawberry nostalgia of 8mm home-movie making, it's difficult to know What audience JJ Abrams was targeting. The kids will be delighted till they see their first death scene (and realize this is Not E.T.), the X-Files fans will be asleep till the climax, and the subtleties of 8mm film making will be lost on all but Tarantino buffs.Though the decision to blend genres may have been overly ambitious, I personally didn’t mind it too much– funnily enough I think I can relate to being a teenage boy saving a town from aliens! (and getting the girl in the process) Best viewed with an open mind, I’m giving it 3 out of 5 stars..but I still refuse to try a Neopolitan thick shake:-)

Very much a Spielberg homage, (not that suprising from JJ Abrams), this movie is set around the same period as E.T. was made and is many ways quite delightful. A group of young kids making a zombie movie get caught up with a major train crash and some unusual goings on. What is making the town's dogs and car engines disappear and why? I give it a Super 8 out of 10.
