Blue fantasy critters from an enchanted forest are big again this summer – and we’re not talking about a sequel to Avatar! The Smurfs is set to introduce the characters of Belgium creator Peyo to a whole new generation, while grownups who collected the titular toys in their childhood will feel a twinge of nostalgia.

Hank Azaria is the evil wizard Gargamel, who has chased the little blue folk out of their home and into New York’s Central Park. For those who grew up with the popular ‘80s cartoon series, this CGI/live action combo will definitely have a wow factor.

However, it’s safe to say that the plot line will be more intriguing to the very young; though Azaria’s amusing performance will help keep parents tuned in.

Director Raja Gosnell previously helmed Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Scooby- Doo, and with The Smurfs he once again demonstrates his flair for combining CGI characters and live action.

The diminutive stars deliver big family fun in the tradition of Stuart Little and Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Extras: • Find the Smurfs Game • Deleted & Extended Scenes • The Smurfs: Comic Book to the Big Screen • Smurf Speak: Meet the Cast • Going Gargamel • Progression Reels.

STARRING: Hank Azaria, Neil Patrick Harris, Sofía Vergara, Jayma Mays, Jonathan Winters, Alan Cumming, Katy Perry, George Lopez, Jeff Foxworthy, B.J. Novak

Did You Know...? The Sony Pictures Imageworks animators studied human skin and colouration in developing the textual quality of Smurf skin, so the Smurfs would not seem “alien” in a live-action setting.

This movie entertain three generations of my family, from my 70 year old father to my 8 year old son.It was a delight to see a movie that could keep a high voltage x-box addicted son occupied for the duration. A movie that is modern, up to date without the smut - Brillant !

Hank Azaria is brilliant as Gargamel - bringing some seriously twisted adult humour to the film, particularly in the "dark and terrible magic" portaloo scene.
If you grew up with Smurfs, this film proves that they've grown up with you, at least in terms of dialogue. You will laugh more than once.

Was brought up with these little blue things and was pleasantly surprised to take a slightly new trip down memory lane. Good to see Doogie Howser doing his bit - still can't believe he bats for the other side!

Having loved the smurfs from a young age I was less than impressed when I disovered they were making this movie.... yet I had a lot... and I mean A LOT OF FUN watching this. The CGI is brilliant and the 'human" character blend in well with the animated. Since buying this on DVD I have watched this many times with younger siblings as well as on my own... sad I know. I look forward to many adventures with the Smurfs on the big screen!!!
