Set in 1963, The Help brings a new perspective to the Civil Rights Movement of the era, as young journalist Emma Stone interviews the domestic help of her town, discovering a world of intrigue and self empowerment from the African-American maids who endure and overcome racial prejudice on a daily basis.

Actor-turned-director Tate Taylor has the support of an outstanding ensemble cast including Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer as the maids who give Stone an insight into their lives, and Bryce Dallas Howard as a pushy Southern belle who’s campaigning for further segregation.

Based on the New York Times best-seller by Kathryn Stockett, The Help succeeds as a heart-tugging drama where the human spirit ultimately triumphs over adversity. The kind of movie Oprah would endorse, and a sobering reminder of how much times have changed.

STARRING: Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Bryce Dallas Howard

Did You Know...? Kathryn Stockett’s book on which this film is based was rejected 60 times before it was eventually published. Also: Jessica Chastain, a vegan, ate soy ice cream melted in the microwave to gain weight for the role of Celia Foote. And Canadian pop singer Melissa Molinaro auditioned for the role of Celia Foote.

it is too weird to have disney tackling stuff that sure aint disney. in the dvd special features the director shows you deleted scenes right and he looks like hes doing a hostage video telling you why they couldnt be included in the end cut of the movie. i would have liked to have seen them and more like them in the movie. other parts were just too ott and cliche like the drunk confontation at the charity event. i still think the help is a good movie and there was still a lot of good bits but its a shame because with the story and the actresses involved it could have been great.

Extraordinary film. There have been many that I've seen with the same subject matter and themes and so I thought I would be prepared. But this film still made me cry. Because in this day and age I think we're all aware of the unthinkable horror when "civilised society" shuns, targets and hurtfully turns on some of its own members. And we like to think that everyone's equal now. But even today as I write this many decades later in 2012, two of my friends still have to go overseas this year to get married, because our laws say that their love is not equal or valid enough to marry here. So I cried when I saw this film... partly because of its story and the amazing performances of Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Sissy Spacek... but mostly because it reminds you that modern society still has not properly learned and still carries the core cruelty and the hurt today.

The movie was a real eye opener to how it was in parts of 1960's America. It took a sensitive issue and dealt with it from two very different perspectives, and it showed how two very brave people stood up for each other and what they dared to believe in to make a difference to others. There was gentle down to earth humor and the characters warm your heart and leave you drained from the outpouring of emotion it will create.

This film was fantastic. It takes a serious social issue in an era where society's view on African-Americans was very polarized and highlights the confronting prejudice that they had to endure on a daily basis - without sugar coating. The courage of one young woman who is outraged by this injustice and has the courage to stand up for what she believes is right despite the overriding beliefs of society shows that we can all make a change - just like she does. A refreshingly funny film that although mostly lighthearted will definitely cut to the bone with the issues and questions it raises about society. Change definitely begins with a whisper, and this film will have you bellowing in bouts of laughter and flooding yourself with torrents of tears as it pulls at your heartstrings. 5 stars.

It's not often you see a movie that you rave about but this one was it. It takes a serious social issue and weaves a story around it with characters so likeable and real that the movie really does have you laughing and crying with the characters. The Help is one of those movies that completely blows you away, but sits there so innocently on the shelf you never see it coming! Everyone should see this movie!

Not only visually beautiful to watch (there's nothing like period pieces when it comes to costume and set design) this film has a wonderful cast, great story, great soundtrack and an upbeat tempo. At over two hours long time passes fleetingly as you are engrossed within the personal stories of each characters development. Tackeling a big issue in american history with reverence, wit and a dash of humour. Not just for the ladies either.
