Young Modern

Young Modern singer John Dowler recently said: “I don’t hate Sydney, it’s my second favourite place to be. The first? Everywhere else!”

Of course, the comments reference Dowler’s most famous song, The Zimmermen’s caustically brilliant Don’t Go to Sydney. A version appears on this new 2010 live album, which sees Young Modern return to Adelaide, where it all began in 1977.

The band burned brightly but briefly, moving to Sydney in 1978, before splitting in 1979. Young Modern might now be old retro, but this live set sounds wonderfully fresh. A welcome return.

Their original late-1970s sound is alive and kicking in this album by Young Modern (note: neither young nor modern). As a first-time listener, I can hear on the surface both James Reyne and the Rolling Stones -- and not just because of the cracking cover of the Stones' 'The Singer Not The Song'. So much more than this, I can hear the delicious sound of the forgotten soldiers with their authentic pub rock, instantly taking you back several decades when the light was golden. Although you can't actually hear it, this album somehow captures the phantom atmosphere of beer-soaked tables, glasses clinking; patrons chilling out to 'Red Dress On' and the fans right up the front going off as 'On Top of the World' starts to play. "Live at the Grace Emily" is not a world-class album, but it is genuine; and it does make you feel like you're right there having a great night out at a beloved local pub.
