[DVD] California’s Bridge School was established to provide the best education access possible to children with severe speech and physical impairments. Neil Young helped found the school in 1986 – his own children have been affected by cerebral palsy.
This 25-year retrospective of performances culled from benefit shows not only displays the ongoing commitment demonstrated by Young and his wife Pegi, but does contain some genuine musical riches above and beyond run-of the-mill charity show fare.
If you never wanted to hear Bruce Springsteen’s Born in the USA again in your life, the power of the wholly acoustic show opener may have you thinking again.
David Bowie, with über bassist Meshell Ndegeocello in tow, breezes through an acoustic but inspiring“Heroes” and Bob Dylan – hardly at the peak of his powers in 1988 – turns in a pretty charming Girl of the North Country.
It’s not all classic aging rockers though: R.E.M. ring in Mr. Young for Michael Stipe’s “favourite R.E.M. song” Country Feedback, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings nearly steal the entire collection with an enthralling, intertwined That’s the Way it Will Be, and Metallica power their way through an acoustic Disposable Heroes.
And for any Australian Tom Waits fans patiently awaiting his return, his 16 Shells from a Thirty-Ought Six is required viewing.
Optional introductions from Bridge students remind us why we’re watching, and DVD sales proceeds go to the school. There’s also a CD version available with some tracks not included on this DVD, including Thom Yorke performing After the Goldrush.

#1. the great boo
Metallica are just awesome on this: helps they're performing one of their classics from Master of Puppets as opposed to the utter rubbish they just put out with Lou Reed. I wish they'd put Thom Yorke's performance of After the Goldrush on the DVD as well!
