The Away Team are classic rap underdogs. The North Carolina duo aren’t a crew for profound musical or lyrical statements. Nope, Sean Boog and Khrysis cobble together low-slung, understated hip hop, and Scars & Stripes is all the better for it.
Peppered with guests – think Phonte, Talib Kweli, Evidence and others – this gem crosses souledout golden era loops and samplecraft with a looser, funkier West Coast strut. Highlights abound.
Cheers flourishes with horns and melodies, Hot Potato makes for an asymmetrical wig-out, and Kweli smokes over the scattershot Set it Off. The Away Team never hit the jackpot, but they accumulate gold.
