Though his beat selection may be found wanting at times, New York’s Styles P has long been a beast on the mic, capable of both poignant street reflection and rugged ghettoism.
Unlike most tough-talkers, there’s a surprising complexity and empathy to his craft. From the squirming synthetic funk of Warren G-produced weedode How I Fly and the tense, spiky We Don’t Play to the astute character deconstruction of I’m a Gee, Master of Ceremonies ticks a number of boxes.
On Children, what seems like an older generation rant – with Pharoahe Monch over a dusty Pete Rock break – reveals itself as a message of concern, support and hope.
