Pat Martino’s extraordinary musical journey continues with a live album, recorded at Washington D.C’s famous jazz club in 2009. The line-up of Hammond organ, tenor sax and drums (no bass) reverts back to the legendary guitarist’s mid ’60s roots, when he played in bands led by jazz organists Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff and Jimmy McGriff.
A child prodigy, who at 16 was on the road with the Lloyd Price Band, Martino brought a new approach to post-bop guitar; with his sustained melodic lines played at lightning speed, eastern influences and versatility beyond his years.
In 1980, after several successful, innovative albums, he underwent surgery to repair a congenital brain aneurysm. The operation saved his life, but left him with amnesia – triggering a 15-year recording/ performing absence.
The now fully recovered guitar great is still on top of his game, exploring the ongoing relationship betwixt jazz and blues on six of his own compositions, and an emotive rendition of Thelonious Monk’s most famous piece, Round Midnight. Hammond B-3 and sax add potent solos throughout this outstanding album.
